15 years on from 9/11
What a horrible post to write.
I can not believe that in 2 days time will mark 15 years since the shocking scenes we all remember from that New York morning. A generation past, everyone remembered where they were when President Kennedy was shot. My generation will always remember where they were when the news started to come in of the first plane hitting the World Trade Centre.
Many lives on that day were lost and millions more have been effected by those events in the last 15 years.
There are monuments around New York with names of office staff , firefighters, police officers, passers by, medical staff and first responders who all lost their lives on that fateful day.
What many people are unaware of though, is the amount of New York residents, tourists and emergency staff that have lost their lives since as a result of the toxic fumes produced when the towers fell.
Cancer is the largest post 9/11 illness to take multiple lives.
Many studies have been carried out over the last 10 years and although the cause of the cancers is hard to definitively associate with the WTC attacks, is it clearly obvious that many cancers and respiratory diseases are a direct result of the towers collapse.
When you think of the make up of the buildings, you have thousands of tonnes of concrete, of steel, of gas pipes, glass, electrical equipment etc. Not to mention all the surrounding infrastructure that was destroyed when the buildings collapsed.
The concrete alone when demolished and inhaled causes silicosis (a form of lung disease) and has been responsible for the deaths of miners and construction workers for generations.
A study of over 55,000 New York residents was carried out in 2012. Studying the test patients between 2003 – 2008 they found a significant rise in Thyroid cancer, prostate cancer and multiple myeloma (A cancer that causes the blood to thicken. A cancer usually associated with Obesity).
Due to the time span it takes some cancers to develop in the human body (some cancers can take 11 – 12 years to show symptoms. Asbestos related cancers have a particularly long delay) it is hard to say that these have developed as a result of the terrorist attacks. Truthfully, we will never know. All we do know is that breathing in that many toxins is going to shorten your life span.
The ‘lady in the dust’, Marcy Borders, died of stomach cancer in August 2015. One of the most iconic pictures of the attacks, the poor lady died at just 42 years of age. Most likely as a direct result of the attacks.
So this September 11th when you are observing your moments silence or watching the documentary on TV, spare a second thought for all those who have died since that fateful day in 2001.
Yes, 2,996 people might have died as a direct result of that day. Yet hundreds more have suffered painful deaths since that day as a result.
